Non-Dutch nationals who are of age (18 or over) and who have been living in the Netherlands consecutively for the past 5 years (with a residence permit) are allowed to vote in municipal elections. Citizens of European Union (EU) member states can vote in municipal council and European Parliament elections immediately upon moving to the Netherlands. You must be registered with the municipality by January 31, 2022.
What do you need to do to vote?
The only thing you need to do is register your residency with the Arnhem municipality. You can do so here. You do not need to register as a voter seperately. The municipality does that for you automatically. In the weeks before the election (the next one is on March 16) you will receive a voting card in the mail. You can take that to any polling station in the city with your ID and cast your vote. It is that easy.
What is the role of the municipality?
The municipality decides about many things that affect you and the way people can live in Arnhem. They make (mental) healtcare policy, decide where to build new houses, roads and public transport. They decide where to plant trees, who can make use of wellfare and which events will take place in our city. That is a lot and it may confront you with a question: what kind of city do I want to live in?

Why is it important to vote in these elections?
Clean energy, more trees, more social housing, fighting poverty, making a fist against racism and discrimination; GroenLinks has achieved much in Arnhem in the past four years. However, there is still a lot to do. Our city is facing an important choice.
We can already notice the effects of global warming. It is impossible to find affordable housing. The gap between rich and poor keeps expanding. We can all see the challenges that face our city. That is why it is important to stay the course we have set out in these past four years. To keep making progress we need a strong GroenLinks. We are the Dutch Green party.
We connect environmental and social issues. We combine our ideals with concrete plans. We have done so for the past four years and we aim to keep doing that in the future.
GroenLinks wants a city where we can work together towards a sustainable and fair Arnhem. A city that will be more green. With more affordable houses. A city where no child will grow up in poverty. A city where you can be who you are and where you can live in good health.
